Aaron Smelser and family in the 1920s

A previous post mentioned the family in the 1920 Federal Census.  Emma & children were in Texas County, while it appears Aaron was at the State Hospital in Vernon County, MO.

Emma died on 13 Mar 1920 in Texas County, MO.  Cause of Death was listed as Flu with a duration of 10 days, and a secondary factor of pulmonary tuberculosis (which the document notes she'd had for 5 years.)  She was 40 years old and (besides Lula, Jessie, and Elmer (James), who were adults) left four minor children, Stella (13), Melissa (11), Clarence (Jerry) (nearly 8), and Etta (a month away from being 5).

By the 1925 Iowa State census, the following are living in Black Hawk County, Iowa:
  • Jessie is married to Elsie and has two children, William and Clarence (and another on the way)
  • Elmer (James), wife Mary, and three children, Sultana (Billie), Clifford, and Helen
  • Stella (an 18 year old) is living with Elmer & family
  • Etta (9 yrs old) is a "daughter" of William and Elizabeth Wielein of Orange Twp. - [the box for father indicates "Aron Smelser", but the box for mother is empty]
I have not found Aaron, Lula & family, Melissa, nor Clarence (Jerry) in the 1925 Iowa census.

Census transcriptions are notorious for spelling errors, so they might have been in Iowa, just indexed with some other surname. If anyone finds them (in the 1925 Iowa State census), please let me know!

DOCUMENTS (Have or seen):
  • 1920  Federal census for Pierce County, MO; and for Vernon County, MO
  • Emma Elmore Smelser's death certificate
  • 1925 Iowa State census for Jessie, Elmer (James), Stella, and Etta
DOCUMENTS NEEDED, QUESTIONS UNANSWERED:
  • When did Aaron move the family to Black Hawk County, Iowa?  Did they all move together or at separate times?
  • And for that matter, why Iowa and not California? (stay tuned for my thoughts on that)
